World record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh overcame a scare to take victory in the women’s high jump at Madrid 2025 on Sunday (29).
The Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division is live streamed on the European Athletics website courtesy of the Eurovision Sport Platform.
With Ukraine battling relegation from the 1st Division, Mahuchikh’s contribution was critical, and she was typically assured as she sailed over 1.91m and 1.94m. But she ran into difficulties at 1.97m, in which she needed three attempts.
Poland’s Maria Zodzik also cleared 1.97m at the third attempt, leaving the duo to fight out first place. But Mahuchikh showed her class with a first time clearance over 2.00m, a height that was 2cm above Zodzik’s lifetime best and also beyond her on this occasion.
Mahuchikh attempted a season’s best 2.03m, but had to settle for the victory on this occasion ahead of Zodzik. Germany’s Imke Onnen was third with 1.94m.
