Germany’s Julian Weber underlined his status as world leader with a dominant victory in the men’s javelin at Madrid 2025 on Sunday (29).
The Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division is live streamed on the European Athletics website courtesy of the Eurovision Sport Platform.
The 31-year-old killed the contest thanks to a 85.15m toss in the opening round, over 10m further than his closest chaser Lithuania’s Edis Matusevicius, author of a 74.76m toss.
In round two, the 2022 European champion unleashed another powerful 84.69m release while Spain’s Manuel Quijera and Portugal’s 2021 European U23 silver medallist Leandro Ramos lifted to second and third thanks to a respective 77.26m and 77.08m heaves.
But Matusevicius bounced back in the third round to regain the runner-spot following a 78.26m throw, a season’s best for the Lithuanian on the eve of his 29th birthday.
After a third effort measured in 74.14m Weber decided to leave the competition having secured the 16 points for Germany and the attention turned to the fierce fight for the following places.
Ukraine’s Silesia 2023 second-place finisher Artur Felfner managed a season’s best of 80.54m in round five to secure the second spot over two metres ahead of Matusevicius’ 78.26m as the Lithuanian, the Spaniard and the Portuguese could not go beyond their previous efforts in the second half of the contest.
